Just a short while ago, there was a huge victory in the travel industry that really didn’t receive all that much attention in the media. Congresswoman Doris Matsui, representing California’s Fifth District, joins us to discuss her Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act. This recently-passed legislation helps make cruise lines fully responsible for their passenger’s safety for the first time. Also joining us this hour is Laurie Dishman, a constituent of Matsui’s, who helped bring this issue to light after she was sexually assaulted on a cruise ship and asked Matsui for help. Finally, Mark discusses just a few tricks he uses when trying to get your way with airlines.
Congresswoman Doris Matsui
Rep. Doris Matsui joins us for a discussion on what the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act means for both the cruise lines and passengers. We’ll talk about the new safety measures that will be taking place on-board your next cruise and the new standards that cruise ships are being held to. In addition to this, Matsui discusses the forces that came together to make this legislation possible.
Though the circumstances surrounding Laurie’s situation are terrible, it’s always great to hear about a local constituent being able to contact her representative and actually get something done. Laurie joins us this hour to talk about what it was like to contact her local congresswoman, what happened next, and how it finally felt to sit in the oval office with President Obama as the legislation was signed into law.
Tricks of the Trade
When you spend as much time on the road as Mark does, things don’t always go according to plan. Planes are delayed, flights are canceled, plans change, etc… etc… In the end, you often find yourself at the mercy of the airlines, or more importantly, the airline representative you happen to be dealing with. Listen in as Mark talks about some of his favorite ways to get what you need from an airline when things go wrong.
Odds and Ends
Every day, we stumble on various sites, products or sources that seem interesting and relevant to our listeners. Unfortunately, we don’t always have time to cover them on-air. Here is a short list of links we found interesting this week!
